Martin and Jill Carter
One of only 23 cars made to meet the Le Mans qualification criteria. Chassis number 1959 had only 29,000 genuine miles on the clock when we bought it in January 2008 and made us the third owners. The previous owner clocked 3,000 miles in his nineteen years ownership which we have already surpassed, once the car was sorted.
The 1220 cc Coventry Climax engine allows the car to reach speeds of 130 mph due to the lightweight fibre glass construction, the only parts of the chassis that are metallic is the engine mounts. The strength comes from the box construction of the body/chassis. In period these cars were reported to be fragile and unreliable, but today, make a perfect classic.
1970 Lotus Elan S4
The Elan was considered by many to be the first serious road car designed and manufactured by Colin Chapman. We are the third owners of the car and it had a genuine recorded mileage of 32,000 when bought. The previous owner bought the car in 2005 following 30 years storage and has sympathetically restored it but sadly due to illness reluctantly sold it.
The 1600 cc twin-cam engine is reliable and speedy. Parts are easily sourced and its fibre glass body makes it immune to rust but liable to craze.
1969 MGB roadster
We imported the MGB from California in 1994, it was in a very sorry state and required a complete rebuild and bare metal respray. Once finished it sailed to Tenerife where for the first year it was our trusty road car logging over 12,000 miles. Note the three windscreen wipers only found on USA spec. cars.
Latest modification which has enhanced the ride was changing the front suspension by substituting the original suspension with double wishbones and coil over telescopic dampers, giving 3 degrees negative camber. This makes the ride height adjustable. These changes also reduce castor angle. Well worth the £500 for parts.
1972 SEAT 600D
The SEAT has proven to be a very expensive ‘free car’ that we won in the Orihuela Car Club’s raffle. It has required a lot of work and money to achieve its present state and though not concours is now pretty well sorted. The body work is not perfect but good enough for us to use on a regular basis.
