Phoenix Car Show at Albatera

Sunday 30 March 2008

On Sunday 30 March the Club visited Albatera to display their classic and specialist cars in the beautiful Plaza de España. The event was sponsored and promoted was the Town Hall and there was a huge turn out by local Spanish residents and other visitors from further afield. Spanish television covered the event as well as the local media.

Members of the public admiring the cars were given voting slips so that they could vote for the car they liked best. Javier Bru who is the councillor responsible for Foreign and European nationals in Albatera stood with members of the committee and the organisers of the day (Mel and Sandra Baker) on the Church steps to announce the results and present the trophies.

There were four trophies to be presented, three of which had been sponsored by local businesses (Vision+, Beep, Alba Dental)and the winners trophy was sponsored by the Ayuntamiento.

The outright winner of the show was a silver streak MG TD - this was the oldest car in the show at a grand old age of 55 years. The car is owned by Joy and Rick Meopham.

Coming a very close second, was Roger Goodfellow´s 1977 Replica Cobra Viper, finished in red.

Third place went to Graham Hayes car which is a 1979 Pontiac Trans-am finished in black with gold accents.

Fourth place was awarded to Mel Baker who displayed his GP Beach Buggy which has a 1954 VW chassis and was constructed in 1979.

After the ceremonies were completed, a police escort was provided and Club members departed for Hondon de los Frailes. We drove on the CV873 northbound which is a superb drivers road with no junctions or turnings for 13km - it was a steady uphill climb with scenic views to the coast. The drive ended in a small village called Los Gabrielles at the restaurant Pondo Rosa for an excellent four course lunch.
