The Wine Run

Monday 02 February 2009

On Sunday 48 members and guests with 21 specialist/classic cars met up just outside Albatera for the Wine Run! The weather forecast was atrocious but the rain held off for much of the day so we were very lucky. After coffee and a chat, we set up for the first part of the drive through the Albanilla, La Murada, Fortuna, Majoya areas for the next coffee stop at La Zarza. We then drove towards Pinoso and arrived at the Co-operative Bodega Pinoso where we were greeted by Javvy and staff for our guided tour of their premises. The talk they gave to members was extremely interesting and covered all the processes of making wine from the stage when the grapes are picked from the fields to when it is bottled. The bodega is one of the largest in the area with over 400 members and was originally founded in 1932. They cover over 3,200 ha. of vineyards averaging 20 years in age and produce 8 million litres of wine per year! 70% of the wine comes from Monastrell grapes and 20% of the wines are produced from organically grown grapes which are guaranteed by the Valencia Region Agricultural Committee. Then of course, came the all important tasting and some tips on how to distinguish the better wines which most of the members enjoyed immensely. After a brief visit to the shop to purchase some supplies, we then headed towards Hondon and into a small village called Barberroja for our lunch at the Finca Rotez before wending our way home. A full writeup of the day is posted on the News section of the site.
