September Club Drive

Sunday 20 September 2009

Despite the minimum support from the club members, this drive was for the few that did attend a great success.
Only fourteen persons with six cars turned up at the meeting point and unfortunately one of the cars had problems from the start and had to retire. The other twelve persons and five cars went on to enjoy the day out as planned.
The weather was kind to us, a nice change from the heat of the last few months, and although the morning was cooler the rest of the day was just right for the picnic for which everyone came well prepared with tables and chairs and picnic baskets full of goodies. After enjoying our picnic we all drove up the mountain road to a height of 1500 metres where most of us took a bracing walk in the Sierra Espuña to see the ice houses.
The members that had not seen the ice houses before were amazed at the sizes and depths of these 17th century buildings which unfortunately have been allowed to become ruins, and also of how the people that had worked and lived there would have had a most difficult way of life. Thank goodness refrigerators were invented.

Lots of photos were made including something that we met on the way !.The photos are of a Ford model T from 1927 which was being brought back to its home ground of Garucha in Almeria, the truck had belonged to a transport company and the name ‘Pedro Lopez’ could still be seen in faded paint on the cabin doors. The vehicle was going home to be restored and given a new lease of life.
