Brian and Adrianīs October Drive
Sunday 18 October 2009
We had tried to do it in March but the weather was against us so we had to delay this beautiful drive until the weather allowed us to be able to appreciate the fantastic scenery and twisting steep and narrow roads of the Sierra Espuņa.
Twenty five members and friends turned out together with twelve classic cars to enjoy a drive that had been planned several months ago. We met at Hotel Lo Monte and set off after one or two small delays into the warm sunshine heading for the mountains near to Murcia. The group kept close together at a leisurely pace and although one of us had to stop for petrol we arrived at our first coffee stop without any problems. We then set off to do some serious driving, going through Alhama de Murcia and being waved at and probably envied by lots of pedestrians and other motorists. Once out of the town we started to climb the narrow twisting roads leading us to Gebas where we could again regroup, then on to the tiny village of El Berro where again the villagers showed their joy as we passed with our beautiful convoy of cars through their tiny streets. Onward we went looking forward to our second coffee stop but on arriving there we discovered that we were not alone in these wonderful hills, it was impossible to park on the normally empty car park or on the road which had attracted lots of other people wanting to enjoy a day out in the country-side, unfortunately no coffee but instead we decided to catch up some of our already lost time by going on and heading for the restaurant at the end of our drive. So off we went again, enjoying the feeling of having to concentrate on getting our cars round the steep twisting bends which brought us down to easier roads and back onto the motorway towards our lunch.
We were expected at the restaurant where a table had been specially reserved for us so that we could sit together and eat our food ( and plenty of it ) whilst we talked about the day we had had and enjoyed. After the meal Eric thanked both Brian and Adrian for their excellently thought our drive.
