February Ace Cafe Meeting
Sunday 07 February 2010
Its different every time!Yes it might now be a regular event but its different every time as new cars and faces drop in on our Ace Café meeting. This month we decided to feature the MG family of cars owned by members and as usual the members obliged. For a group photo Jack`s MGA took centre stage flanked by variants of the MGB, a Midget and a Frog Eye Sprite. Our President Bruce is going to make a selection of some of the photo´s we made and send them together with a short letter to the MG Owners Club in the hope that they will print them in their members monthly magazine together with an open invitation to anyone visiting our area to pop in and enjoy an Ace Café morning.
If you wish to know more about our MG´s, look on the ‘Members Cars ’ part of the site.
New visitors this time brought along yet more hidden jewels from the Costa Blanca. A couple of cars that caught my eye through their Two-Tone colour schemes were a Morgan and a Riley.
The Morgan reminded me so much of “coffee and cream” with its cream over brown paintwork with a broad leather strap across the louvred bonnet. These cars are truly unique in style and I always struggle to put an age to any of them, so when I say, “they all look alike,” it´s my personal complement to Morgan and their timeless classics.
We tend to think of a vinyl car roof as the ultimate topping on a Ford Cortina or a Granada of the 1970`s yet Riley were building their cars to look like this in the 1950`s. This particular one in black with white side panels below the waistline was topped off with a black vinyl roof and looked splendid. I didn`t get a chance to speak to the owner but next time I will. I am curious to know its history as it´s almost as old as I am and it´s a contender to be my featured car in the future.
Some heavy American Muscle weighed in alongside Tony Mansell`s Dodge Charger so if you prefer your engines in Cubic Inches rather than Cubic Centimetres have a look in the Galley. As to the technical info – you`ll have to ask Tony !, and if you prefer your cars to be really big take a look at the Cadillac, which I saw being driven away at the end of the meeting using just one finger to steer it through the traffic.
Finally - Have a look at the close up photo of the "Boyce Motometer" on the bonnet of the old Ford and see if you know what it was for.
