February Club Night -10 Pin Bowling
Wednesday 10 February 2010
Its a while since some of us were teenagers but the years certainly rolled back when we visited the Ozone in Torrevieja for the club`s annual 10 Pin Bowling night. Those that study form were having side bets on Dave Patten and Christine Aspinal retaining their championships whereas this year there were some new names amongst the pack so predicting the result was going to be tricky. For me the evening began with a memory test – when the lady at the reception desk asked me for my shoe size before I could be issued with the regulation bowling shoes. Well I got the shoes and they fitted quite well, indeed once fitted to the correct feet I began to feel quite like a professional. Then once the lanes were allocated I set out to find a suitable ball. This meant something I could actually lift and not drop on my foot as the bowling shoes did not have safety toe caps. Finally I settled on a lime green ball, stamped 14 and with holes that did not threaten to detain my fingers and drag me down the lane like grapeshot.
The next couple of hours passed by all too quickly as I slowly refined my technique from the Barnes Wallace prototype, to the rolling gutter cleaner, before launching the perfect Exocet missile that brought about my first Strike. Sadly my new found skill was transient as more gutter cleaners followed. Like my old School Reports used to say, "Erratic. If he tried harder he would do better."
Thankfully the scores were automatically calculated and displayed on the monitors so there was no doubt at the end of the night who the winners were. Both of last years champions failed to retain their crown as Dorothy Fielding and Mel Baker rose above the rest of us to be worthy winners. - Congratulations and Well Done to you both!
Everyone agreed it had been a thoroughly enjoyable night and and terrific value for money. In the meantime I`m off to do some secret practising before next time.
