March Ace Cafe Meeting - Mercedes Benz

Sunday 07 March 2010

Our Ace Café meeting has definitely become something to look forward to each month and this time was no exception. Our theme for March was Mercedes and although several of our regular visitors didnīt come this time ( they were in Madrid for a two day special club meeting of Mercedes SL 500īs ) we still had a good turn out of members and visitors with their variety of Mercedes cars.
The weather didnīt look too promising but managed to stay dry and of course this always encourages Classic enthusiasts to ‘get the car out ’ and give it a run and show it off to anyone interested. Amongst our visitors was the owner of the Jaguar XK140 Coupé which we featured in December, but this time he brought his 1956 Mercedes 190 SL and proudly showed us how easily the soft top folded away and opened the bonnet to display the original engine with its 4 cylinder single overhead cam, aluminium head and iron block, all clean and tidy and in perfect working order. Another interesting car is the 1966 250 S belonging to Seņor Constantino Huertas Marin, he bought this car in Madrid some years ago and has since given it lots of TLC resulting in the shining example that it is today, the car had probably been used in the past in some official capacity because when Constantino bought it the carpet in the rear right hand side of the car was worn away, probably by some heavy footed politician whilst the chauffeur enjoyed driving the car. If you look on the Image Gallery part of the site you can see several photoīs of this car as it was when Constantino bought it.
Of course our faithful members were also present with Dave showing off his own restored 230 SL, Bruce with his 380 SL and Karl with his 500 SL amongst others, and Bruce brought along a collection of cards with pictures of all available Mercedes cars with details and descriptions and also a few model cars for those of us that canīt afford the real thing.
Other Classics that were on display were a New York Taxi with original paintwork, a Corvette with an original sticker in the rear window and a mixture of VWs, MGs, Jaguars, and the Rolls from Mick and Maddy which has undergone a major repair to the suspension and braking system carried out by Roger Taylor.
All in all another interesting Sunday morning with plenty to see and plenty to talk about.
