June Club Night - Autotest
Wednesday 09 June 2010
The annual club auto-test showed that most of the participants had not become much more skilled since last year.Meeting at the Castillo de Conesa ( the clubs home ground ) with a nice warm evening in front of us, the volunteers carefully set up the auto-test course designed and produced by our President Bruce, and shortly after the fun began.
The course with its six different testing stations namely, number one, the balloon test, reversing your car and bursting the balloon with your offside back tyre, number two, the egg and spoon test, where the driver had to carry a small ball, held at arm’s length on a small spoon and drive to a small bucket and drop the ball into the bucket, the numbers three and four, driving forward to as near as possible to an upright pole, without touching the pole but getting as near as possible, then doing the same thing again but in reverse, then number five, whilst driving without stopping trying to knock down six bollards with a ball tied onto a piece of string on the end of a short stick and finally, releasing a small ball and letting it run down the inside of a piece of solid pipe, whilst driving to the other end of the pipe and catching the ball as it came out, required more than just driving skills.
The twelve drivers came one at a time to test themselves and their driving abilities, and by watching how their predecessors fared and mentally noting how not to make some of their mistakes the excitement grew as one by one the competitors vied for pole position, of course offside mirrors were an advantage and the wider your tyres the better, also a low slung car with low doors gave one or two of the contestants a definite lead, but never the less the concentration and steadfast nerve of some of the drivers gave them extremely high scores, but there could only be one winner, and after all contestants had done their best the scores were added up and the winner was decided.
The course was cleared and the drivers and spectators retired to the comfort of the bar where two of the clubs members were waiting to welcome them. Tina Benden and Brian Stennet had invited everyone to enjoy some bubbles and cake which they had provided as a gesture of club friendliness in order to help celebrate their combined birthdays.
When everyone was comfortably seated and had a drink in front of them, Bruce stopped the music and to an expectant silence, announced the results of the evening’s auto-test. Some of the drivers were disappointed by their low scores and of course all kinds of excuses were heard, but the final and highest score was then announced and the winner was a very proud Karl Neunzer with a total score of 220 points out of a possible 250. Bruce presented Karl with his well earned trophy and the evening returned once again to the discussions about how it should have been done ( or not ) and the enjoyment of the bubbles and the cake.
Our next club outing is the Club Drive on Saturday the 19th of June, details are on the site and bookings are being taken until Sunday the 13th. See you there?.
