Country to Coast Drive - 27 April 2008

Coffee stop. Click to view full image38 of our members with 20 cars met at one of our usual meeting places the Vistabella Restaurant on the San Miguel/Bigastro Road. After coffee and a briefing on the run we left for a leisurely relaxed drive to Jacarilla and Benejuzar that are some of the older villages in the area.

After passing through these we continued on to Rafal before heading north east towards Dolores. This part of the drive was on quiet roads through the orange and lemon groves of the flat plains of the Rio Segura, which stretch to the north of it.

The route continued through the citrus plantations to the north and in the valley of the Rio Segura. The whole of this area is very flat and used to be marshland many years ago, some of it still is. We continued on towards Dolores and touched on its outskirts before branching off right towards Santa Pola.

We branched off of the main Elche road and entered Santa Pola and headed for the town center and the beach road. The beach road offered lovely scenic views of the coast and the marina. We stopped for coffee at the Restaurante Varaderos, which is almost opposite the boat yard on the left hand side of the road as you are passing through. We sat on the terrace, which offered lovely relaxing views of the coastline and beach.

After coffee we continued on along the beach road for as far as it goes. This drive offers some very nice beach scenery and towards the end the chance to view one of smallest churches ever seen. You would be pushed to get 10 people inside, and that’s without the preacher!

We continued on the beach road towards Alicante and stopped to explore the beautiful Park with its lovely waterfalls, beautiful gardens and plants.

The day finished with a very nice lunch at the Restaurant Rincon de Luna.
