Ruins and Mountain Roads of the Marina Alta

photo. Click to view full imageEveryone made their own way to the meeting point near El Campello which is 72Km from Torrevieja, and despite the threatening clouds and the odd shower everyone arrived safely.

Departing at 11.15 we took the road north for a run of 60Km passing through VILLOYOSA with its famous coloured houses, just skirting Benidorm, we started to climb to the first village and after gaining some height we came to FINESTRAT.

Continuing along a well surfaced, but narrow twisting road commanding the driver’s full attention we reached SELLA, with unparalleled mountain views along the way and the weather clearing all the time.

Just after the village we stopped to rest the cars and take refreshments at Bar Piscina, run by Ramon. Just then a shower started so we squeezed ourselves inside and practiced our Spanish, or Valenciano which they tend to use more in this area.

After the showers cleared up we proceeded along the serpentine roads, through the highest mountains of the area (what views) and finally reached RELLEU with its ruin of a castle.

We skirted around the edge of the mountain taking the road south towards Alicante and arrived at THE OLD MILL RESTAURANT run by Shaizi and Tommy, where they made us most welcome and we sat down to a very enjoyable carvery.

On leaving we turned left towards AIGUES and the twisting road continued with tremendous views over playa San Juan and Alicante all the way back to the motorway and N332 near El Campello.
