Salt Lost? and Castle Found!
Then we entered the real Spain and followed a country road to the pristine time warp village of Salinas, stopping for welcome refreshments and a brisk walk to the village square and the San Antonio Abad church built in 1751.
Once regrouped, we continued for a short drive catching glimpses of the castle of Sax that has dominated the region for so many centuries. We soon arrived at the Castle and Eric who had gone on ahead to get the key was waiting for those fit, or young enough, to venture to the top! There were unparalleled views of the surrounding area - what it would have been like to storm it??? A torch was required for those who wished to climb the spiral staircase to the highest tower.
Once everyone was safely down and Eric had checked that he had not locked any one in(!) we left Sax and proceeded along the twisty road to Elda. Then back towards home ground with a coffee stop in Aspe with a welcome roaring log fire. Suitably refreshed it was off to Crevillente for lunch.
After many red traffic lights we all arrived at the lovely Las Palmeras Restaurant where we were made most welcome in the terrace dining room - one member remarked “if I had known it was going to be this posh I would have got dressed up!” The waitresses were soon on hand, and with wine flowing and food served the chat started - even though it had been cold and wet during the day spirits were high and all too soon it was time to head for home.
See you all on the Christmas drive and sun would be nice, if someone can arrange it!
