April Club Night.
If you ever really wanted to race a Formula 1car then you should have been there.
Bruce, our President, had done wonders with the organizing of the event and was there to ensure that everything went fairly and according to the rules.
The track was prepared and racing conditions were perfect as the drivers went to their places and readied themselves for the challenge awaiting them.
The practice laps had been finalized as the leading drivers took their cars to the starting positions, the officials were alert and the marshals were ready. The excitement of the race track could be felt in the air as the start signal began its count down.
Three, Two, One, GO and the race was on, the cars raced forwards towards Castle Kink and into Bakers Bend, the drivers now and then having to fight to control their racing machines as the adrenalin raced in their veins, then through Conesa Curves, some really nasty hairpin bends, and onto San Miguel Straight, over the starting point and one lap was completed.
This was a knock-out competition and as the drivers completed their 10 laps, the winner was announced by the officials and the next competing drivers then fought for the honour of winning their place and the chance to go through to the next round.
Although some really nasty moments happened with the cars going almost out of control, the marshals did their work and kept the track in good racing condition so that the race could go on. The race management now and then had to warn the more over excited drivers to calm down and be a bit less aggressive as their cars slipped dangerously from the track causing excited cheers from the race crowd.
The last round of the competition came and the excitement was felt as the two drivers took their places at the starting position.
Again, Three, Two, One, GO and away they went.
Because of having the experience of the former laps the two drivers were extra careful not to get themselves into trouble as the race progressed, with great care and precision the cars were maneuvered around the corners and raced down the straights until the fastest driver came over the finishing line only a few yards in front of his opponent, a tremendous round of applause and cheers from supporters was heard, and the final winner was congratulated and brought to the podium where he received his well earned Trophy and the customary bottle of bubbly, ( which he typically saved rather than spraying it over the crowd ), he also was presented with a certificate to commemorate his well earned victory.
The final winner was Tony Mansell ( it must be in the name ) after a close fight against Colin Edghill. Well done both, and well done to all that tried ( especially the ladies ), but we were not quite as good as the winners themselves.
The next club event is the Recote Valley Drive on Sunday 26th of April.
