June Club Night
Well you can’t say it didn’t go with a bang.
In fact it went with a lot of bangs. After an almost silent beginning, whilst the film crew from SOL productions (Local TV Company) were doing their ‘takes’, the fun began.
The idea was for the drivers to complete a sort of obstacle course, firstly by reversing over a balloon with their offside rear wheel, then secondly, drive forwards to a standing pole, stopping as close as possible to the pole with the front end of the car, do a three point turn and repeat this maneuver with the back end of the car. Then came the ‘egg and spoon’ test, the driver had to hold a spoon at arms length outside the car, on which was placed a small ball, drive about 20 meters in this position and drop the ball off the spoon into a small bucket. Then last but not least, had to drive into a ‘funnel’ between two ropes and stop with the front end of the car as close as possible to both sides of the funnel of rope.
The spectators encouraged the drivers and also took part in the happening by their cheers and laughs as the competitors burst the balloons and dropped the ball from the spoon.
Measurements were taken at the pole tests and again at the rope funnel and scores were given at all the obstacles, the points were added together and we ended with a happy winner and also a happy loser.
The film crew took lots of good footage of the cars, for a future series to be shown later this year, on your local TV. The club had been selected as an excellent example of Classic Car enthusiasts of all nationalities meeting together showing how well supported Phoenix Classic Car Club was, with a typical evening meet at the Castle in San Miguel. Cars ranged from an early rare Citroen convertible, an Austin Healey frog eye Sprite, a brace of MG´s, Jag’s, Merc’s, Rolls Royce’s, VW Beatles and a Karmann Ghia, nearly 30 cars in all. What a shining tribute they made to their owners!
The club members finally relaxed and discussed the events of the evening and it was agreed that a very good time was had by all.
The happy winner of our Gymkhana event was Nick Beamish and his Mini convertible, with 95 points, and was presented with the customary bottle of bubbly. The happy loser was Mick Whybrow and his Rolls Royce, with 7 points and was presented with a consolation prize of a bottle of window wash.
Next Drive is on the 28th June; see the web site for details. Please book early.
