2009-09-02 ROCKS ROMANS AND FISH?
Over 20 members, plus a honeymoon couple as guests, braved the heat to enjoy the first run of the Autumn season to Mazarron and Bolnuevo. Meeting near Cartagena, and being suitably refreshed, we set off for the mountains. The pass of 352 meters was easily reached, but the long descent is twisty with many tight bends, which required much wheel turning as most of the cars were produced before power steering was even thought of. On arriving in Mazarron the beaches were deserted and the town pleasantly quite. (Most of the Spanish having departed the weekend before) Making our way to the Isla playa Beach and parking right in the middle, we soon attracted many Spanish - and in swift succession - three police cars who wanted to know what was going on! The cars made a splendid display. Members then had time to visit the museums (Boat or Fish) or bars to get a quick look at some of the treasures of Mazarron. The drive continued to Bolnuevo and the collection of wind blown rocks that are known as The Enchanted City. Amazingly most of the members had not seen them before and were suitably impressed. Retracing our steps another refreshment stop was called for before tackling the long climb up to the pass again. Led by Ericīs Barchetta, closely followed by Colin and Annīs 964 Porsche, we all had a safe but fast tyre squealing fun drive to the top on deserted roads, where a stop was called to admire the views over the plains of Cartagena. We descended through small villages onto long straight roads, and quickly through Fuenta Alamo on to the Lunch stop near Balsapintada. Turning off the main road at the side of a petrol station, the convoy was stopped by Traficos for going the wrong way through, though there were no signs! However with the cars as our passports it was all smiles as they admired the parade of colourful classics, and waved us through. The restaurant was completely surrounded by many large trucks and cars, a testimony to its popularity, though we managed to find a secure place for our cars where we could supervise while we ate. The 9 meal was excellent and the Pan de Calatrava pudding was big enough to feed an army.
Speeches were made thanking the members for coming on such a hot day and to Ann and Eric for organizing it.
Donīt miss the drive to The Sierra Espuņa on the 20th September Book now for the escorted excursion to the Ice wells, a not to be missed adventure, a first for the club.
