March Club Drive

photo. Click to view full imageBecause the weather had let us down on our February Drive, we were looking forward to some sunshine for our March outing, but when Tony telephoned me at nine o´clock to say it was sissing down where he lives and asking if the drive was still on, my heart sank and I thought again all this work for nothing. Nevertheless we met at the arranged place and with a good show of Classics set off despite the rain on the road to ruin.
At 10.30 we got going and found an alternative route to get us onto the N332 which is being dug up and put down faster than the eye can blink, a new side road here, a new roundabout there, this bit closed off, a new bit opened, it´s impossible to say from one day to the next where we go to the right or left but thanks to Colin and Ann´s checking of the route we managed to keep going in the right direction.
After passing through Santa Pola and going along the coast road under
Gran Alicant we arrived at 11.45 for our first coffee stop and spent half an hour re-enforcing ourselves in a warm comfortable bar/restaurant, before getting back behind the wheel with the windscreen wipers going, onto the second part of our drive. This brought us past El Altet and onto the road which was eventually to bring us to the aim of our drive namely ‘ the ruin ’.
The historical site of the Roman ruins of L´Alcúdia near to Elche where the famous bust of the ‘Dama De Elche ’ was discovered more than a hundred and twenty years ago, welcomed us with an interesting film about the history of the excavations and discoveries of this now famous site, and afterwards we then either wandered around the site itself or took a look at the many exhibits of artefacts found there. This purpose built exhibition centre is a new building with a small charge for entry that is well worth paying, and as a show of appreciation for the members supporting this drive, the entrance fee was paid from the club funds.
At 14.00 we got back on the road and fortunately the rain had reduced itself to next to nothing as we set off on the last leg of the drive which brought us through the Parc Natural El Fondo with its countless palm plantations and narrow winding roads, bringing us at last back to civilization and over the Motorway on to the Restaurant Dos Palmeras in San Isidro for a typical Spanish lunch, over which we took our time enjoying the almost countless different starters and a delicious main course of Paella, the meal ended with a sweet and coffee and everyone was more than pleased even though we had had some rain, that the day had turned out to be the success that it was. What´s a bit of rain anyway when you have both an interesting drive, and a good meal and enjoyable company to share it with ?.

Our next event is the Ace Café on Sunday the 4th of April and the theme is ‘Air Cooled ’, see you there.
