June Ace Café Meeting
Señor Juan Antonio Serrano Estañ the owner of the Jaguar XK 140 Coupe which we featured in our December 2009 write up and also the owner of the 1956 Mercedes 190 SL which he showed us in March this year, came this time in his Biscuter Voisin Microcar and told us the following.
The Biscuter: This was the creation of the French engineer Gabriel Voisin, one of the pioneers of aviation, and it was soon the subject of an agreement between him and the Spanish company Auto Nacional, S.A. for manufacturing it at the company’s headquarters in Sant Adrià de Besòs, ready for marketing in Spain. Output reached 10,000 units. The purchase price of 25,000 pesetas amounted to three years’ salary in terms of the average salary of the time. Its monocoque chassis with exposed aluminium bodywork and canvas top made it a favourite among the people. It weighed 240 kilos, had a top speed of some 76 kilometres an hour, and had a petrol-consumption rating of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Owing to its low weight, the first Biscuter vehicles had no reverse gear: parking was done by pushing the car.
Of course there were many other beautiful exhibits, some of them new to us but also some of our old favourites, Tony brought his 1930 Chevrolet 1.5 ton truck and also told us that the restoration of his 1928 Austin 7 was coming along nicely. There were several sporty Americans, some new, some older but all shining and interesting, a couple of Mini´s, a couple of Rolls´s and a further nice mixture of well turned out Classics for all to admire and enjoy. It gets better every time and if it keeps on as it is then we can expect next time even more surprises.
Lots more photo´s on the Gallery section of the site, well worth taking a look at.
Our next Ace Café meeting is on Sunday July 4th.
